An essay can be generally defined as an essay that is a statement of the author’s view, but often the definition is so ambiguous and overlapping with the definitions of an essay, a report, a book, a newspaper, and even a short story that the term is nearly useless. Nowadays essays are often subdivided into formal and non-formal. The most common format for formal essays is a roughly parallel arrangement of ideas in text. Non-formal essays, on the other hand typically employ a personal style, and may differ in length, and may refer to various related subjects.

When writing an essay the most important thing is to keep it interesting for the reader. The writer should not get bogged down by how long it takes to write it. Like all writing, essays are often written in small amounts to achieve the desired results. However should the essay not be interesting enough to read, the whole idea of the essay will be lost. In general, essays can be divided into two kinds: argumentative and descriptive. A descriptive essay uses words to describe a subject or a particular situation. It can also draw upon literary devices such as metaphors and similes to great advantage.

Argumentative essays, by contrast are written to convince the reader to a conclusion. A typical argument essay consists of four elements: conclusion, argument, counter-argument and information.
